Task 4 - Final Compilation

Apoplectic_Nadhrah binti Abdul Razak_Task3

The design of this artwork was heavily inspired by a minimalist poster style, similar to the Pearl Jam by Unga. I decided to keep the layout simple and clean, using not a lot but a bold human silhouette as the main visual element to make the message easily interpreted. Like the reference, bold shapes was the focus and the colours were limited instead of using complex details. However, I adjusted the concept to make it more appropriate for the wider audience, instead of expressing "talking bad stuff," this design expresses the general feeling of being a little bit too hot headed.

The design as a whole represents the feeling of being "apoplectic," meaning extremely angry. The half exposed brain with scribbles around it and steam coming out symbolises how ones head could be overwhelmed with thoughts and emotions. While the symbols coming out the mouth shows the anger that people sometimes impulsively let out. Overall, it reflects how emotions can take control of both the mind and speech.

To strengthen the visual, multiple design principles was used. Contrast was one of the big ones, applied through the red figure against a black background. Emphasis is created by the brain and the speech area. Visual hierarchy, balance, and negative space to guide the user's attention was also utilised. As well as the combination of the text and image, which was to help deliver the concept more efficiently.

Final Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?

This module has made me understand visual communication. It has thought me how to communicate using layout, typography color theory and other design elements. Furthermore, I have learnt about the visual hierarchy. It has taught me the importance of the size of the design, color, and contrast to create hierarchy and emphasize important elements.

What did I enjoy most?

I enjoyed task 3 the most. It was fun trying to come up with different ways I can design something but still using the design principles I learnt from task 2. Exploring my own creativity on how to design a poster that has a similar message as my chosen artwork was intriguing, somewhat challenging yet fun. Furthermore, incorporating my knowledge based on what I have learnt in this module has also helped me in developing my final outcome even better. Moreover, I had the help of my lecturer and used his inputs to develop my artwork.

What did I not enjoy most?

Generally, there was nothing that I did not enjoy in this module as I think everything was quite straightforward. My lecturer has also been very helpful with helping out for my tasks. All in all, it was definitely enjoyable.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

I realised that I am more creative than I initially thought, especially when I am given the freedom to explore my own ideas. I also learnt that I tend to improve a lot through feedback, as my work became better after taking my lecturer’s suggestions into account. At the same time, I noticed that I can sometimes struggle with generating ideas at the start, but once I get inspired, the process becomes much easier and more enjoyable. Overall, this module helped me become more confident in my design decisions.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

I think what has changed is my understanding of how designing works. Before, I focused more on making things look nice, but now I think more about layout, hierarchy, and how to communicate a message effectively. I also became more open to feedback and more confident in improving my work. However, what has not changed is my creative interest and curiosity when designing. I still enjoy experimenting with different ideas and styles, and I still rely on inspiration to help me get started when I feel stuck.

What are my aspirations?

My aspiration is to become a successful graphic designer. I want to continue improving my skills, develop my own design style, and create visually engaging designs. In the future, I hope to work on projects that allow me to express my creativity while also effectively communicating ideas to others.
