Task 3: Type Design & Communication

For our third assignment, we are supposed to choose an existing font from the 10 fonts given and study the fonts anatomical parts. After that, we are to design a font of our own. We are able to choose whether we want to design uppercase or lowercase letterforms.

- I have chosen to design lowercase letterforms and after considering all 3 options, I decided to go with the figure 1.3 (calligraphy pen). In my opinion, it's the most unique one out of the rest. With that in mind, I continue my work by digitizing the fonts.

- For the process of importing the fonts, I used FontLab 8. I adjusted the side bearings of the fonts while referring to the guide given by Mr Vinod.

Specific feedback:

Week 10
General feedback: Make guidelines on the letterforms to help you guide on the placement of the letterfoms.
Specific feedback:

Week 11
General feedback: All the letters should have the same weight and consistency.
Specific feedback: Don't use the width tool too much as it is not necessary.

Week 12
General feedback: Use the guides given by Mr Vinod to adjust the side bearings as it will help you save time when kerning.

Week 13
General feedback:
The main focus for your poster should be your fonts and don't do too many designs/graphic elements to it.
Specific feedback: Too much negative space for the poster. Try repeating the same sentence to fill in the negative spaces.

Reflection

Experience
Learning to design the fonts has helped me learn the importance of precision. This task has helped me to learn the history of creating and developing fonts as well as help me explore my creativity.

Observation
Designing fonts has taught me to take a closer look at how letters are made. It's interesting because you notice the small details, and you see how the shapes of letters can tell a story.

Findings
Exploring font design has led to interesting discoveries, where each letter's shape and style hold secrets. Digging into these findings helps me make words not only look good but also easy to read.
