For our first project, we are required to design a custom box for a non-boxed item. We need to choose 2 products from our daily surroundings and the size of the items have to be in between 15cm-20cm. We also have to provide a brief justification for the selected items, design the box structure, and the prototype (physical).

BOX MAKING
For this project I decided to work on a packaging for a portable humidifier, and a pair of sunglasses. I first started sketching out a packaging for my sunglasses.

For the sunglasses packaging, Mr Shamsul said that it is fine and that I can keep this.

As for the humidifier packaging, Mr Shamsul said that it is too simple. So he told me to come up with 2 new sketches for this. He also mentioned that there is no need for a holder since the humidifier is big already.

Mr Shamsul approved of these boxes and said that he preferred the second one. Though I tweaked it a bit to have a window on the front and sides since he said that I should tweak it a little. After that, I started doing my dieline on Adobe Illustrator.

At first, while I was measuring the dieline for the humidifier I was quite skeptical on the mechanism being functional as I wasn't too sure whether the measurements of the flaps were right. So, I just estimated based on what I thought was logical.

After being done with the dieline, I booked for the laser cut machine on our campus. I forgot to take pictures of me being there but the overall process was quite smooth and I made a few extra copies incase a mistake were to occur.

Material used for Humidifier Box: Ivory Paper, Transparent plastic

For my the first try, I took quite some time to work on it since there are some parts I had to cut because the laser cut couldn't properly detect my dieline. But, it turned out better than expected and the box functioned as it's somewhat suppose to.

Though it did have a bit of a malfunction on the locking mechanism since the lid got cut off by the laser machine and it wasn't supposed to look like that, so I tried again with another copy of the dieline that had the right measurements.

This one turned out very well and everything worked like it's supposed to. I even added a transparent plastic on the window to make it look nicer instead of it just being a hole. The humidifier fits perfectly in it too.

The overall experience for this box was relatively easy however I did have some trouble with the locking mechanism to close the box as it didn't work as I intended. There were definitely a lot of trial and error with this one but I managed in the end and it became functional.
